Cerritos College freshman doubles players
Doug Edwards (
Western
HS) and
Jason Wall
(
Lakewood HS) continue to avenge losses from earlier in the season.
And now they are accomplishing them at the most important time of the year.
The duo won their first two matches at the California Community College
Athletic Association State Championships, which are being held at the El
Dorado Tennis Center in Long Beach.
Edwards and Wall opened with a convincing 6-4, 6-2 win over
Fresno City College's Jose Hilla and Ignacio Lucero, who were ranked #7 in
Northern California. The #4-rated doubles team in Southern California
followed that performance with an even more convincing, 6-3, 6-1 victory
over Diego Almedia and Alexandre Rigobelo of Ventura College. The Pirate duo
defeated a different Falcon doubles team earlier in the season in a
non-conference match. But the win advances Edwards and Wall into the
semifinals.
The duo, just two wins away from the state championship, will
square off against Waylon Bennett and Olumide Sherman-Norman of Grossmont
College, who are no strangers to each other. The Falcon freshmen defeated
their opponents, 6-3, 7-5 in the Southern California team semi-finals two
weeks ago, but lost to them last week in the semi-finals of the Ojai
Tournament, 4-6, 6-2, 5-7. A win in the semi-finals will pit them against
the winner of the Hassan Abbas/James Preston (Ventura) against
Bellingham/Evan Jurgensen (College of the Desert)
match in the other semi-finals.
