The Cerritos College men's tennis team went into
their first round of the Southern California
Regional Playoff match against Riverside College
knowing they had defeated them earlier in the
season. The Falcons, seeded #3 in the playoffs,
hosted the #6 Tigers on Tuesday, but experienced
something they didn't anticipate: injuries. With top
singles player
Doug Edwards (Western
HS) and talented freshman
Tim Lee
(Whitney HS) felled by ailments, the
Falcons dropped a 5-4 decision. The loss ends the
team's season record at 12-5, while the Tigers
(15-6) advance to the second round next Tuesday.
In their first meeting, Cerritos controlled the
bottom half of the singles ladder, while Edwards
pulled off a three-set win over defending state
champion Daniel Coehlo. On Tuesday, it was Coehlo
who was able to take advantage of an injured Edwards
to post a 6-0, 6-3 win at the top of the ladder. The
Falcons did hold service at the bottom half, winning
all three. Lee was forced to retire in his #3
singles match and was trailing 1-6, 2-4 at the time.
But, in the doubles action, Riverside was able to
win two of the three matches, including a 3-6, 6-4,
6-2 win by Diego Miranda and Michael Lim over
sophomores
Nik Bote
(Mayfair HS) and
Carlos
Gomez (Kennedy HS) in the #2
position to clinch the victory. Sophomores
Matt Jun
(Cerritos HS) and
David Sim
(Cerritos HS) posted a 7-5, 7-5 win in
their doubles match to account for the lone win.
Also winning in singles were Bote (4-6, 6-0, 6-2),
Gomez (4-6, 6-0, 6-4) and Sim, who posted a 6-1, 6-4
victory.
