After the first day of the 109th Annual Ojai Valley Tennis
Tournament, the Cerritos College men's tennis
team saw one of their two singles players and
both doubles teams win their opening matches.
The remaining players will continue on the
second day of the four day tournament, with
singles action getting underway at 8:00 a.m. and
doubles play starting at 1:00 p.m.
In singles action, sophomore
David Sim
(
Cerritos HS) earned a first round bye
before defeating Donovan Tronshaw of Victor
Valley College, 6-1, 6-0. He will now face
top-seeded Zach Taylor of Ventura College at
8:00 a.m. on Friday. As for sophomore
Carlos
Gomez (
Kennedy HS), he had
a first round bye, but was then defeated, 6-2,
1-6, 4-6 by Phil Wan of Chabot College.
Both doubles teams are ranked in the tournament, with
top-seeded
Doug
Edwards (
Western HS) and
Jason Wall (
Lakewood HS)
winning easily in their first match. The duo
earned a first round bye and then eliminated
Jose Angulo and Michael Marquez of Allan Hancock
College, 6-2, 6-1. The duo, who reached the
semi-finals last year, will now face Daniel
Brito and Michael Martin of Modesto College.
Sophomores
Nik Bote (
Mayfair
HS) and Gomez, who are seeded #7 in the
tournament, posted a 6-4, 7-5 win over Ari Cohen
and Paul Nguyen of Los Angeles Pierce College in
their first match of the day after the two
received a first round bye. They will look to
advance to the next round when they face Ron
Hooper and Noah Winters of American River
College.
