Although the
Cerritos College men's tennis team doesn't have any
singles players competing in the Southern California
Regional Playoffs, two of their three doubles teams
have advanced to the Round of 16. The second round
of the playoffs will take place on Friday, with the
finals slated for Saturday at Long Beach City
College.
Sophomores
Doug
Edwards (Western HS) and
Jason Wall (Lakewood HS),
fresh off their Ojai Tournament doubles
championship, were seeded #2 for the regional
playoffs. After a first round bye, the duo
eliminated Stanislav Magarchenko and Spencer
Davidson of San Diego Mesa College, 6-1, 6-0. They
are now set to face South Coast Conference opponents
Bruno Araugo and Alonso Leon of College of the
Desert, who they defeated in the semi-finals of the
Ojai Tournament.
The other doubles
team still alive are sophomore
Nik Bote
(Mayfair HS) and
Carlos
Gomez (Kennedy HS), who also
received a bye in the first round. They won their
first match over Santa Barbara City College's Alex
Zazove and Zack Scott, 6-2. 6-4, and will also face
a conference opponent, Richard Tetteh and Taylor
Witt of Mt. San Jacinto College, who Edwards and
Wall defeated in the Ojai championship match.
Freshman
Tim Lee
(Whitney HS) and
Matt Jun
(Cerritos HS) won their opening round
match, 6-3, 6-1 over Jordan Lomas and James Howard
of San Diego Mesa College, 6-3, 6-1. But, in their
next match, they faced #3-seeded Hassan Abbas and
Zach Taylor of Ventura College. Playing one of their
best matches of the season, Lee and Jun were
defeated 7-6 (5), 7-5, but went down with a fight.
