Just two weeks into the season, two of the top teams in Southern California squared off in what turned out to be a match worthy of a state championship. The Cerritos College men's tennis team, ranked #6 in Southern California, posted a 6-3 non-conference home win over top-ranked Riverside Community College on Tuesday. The Falcons (3-0) put the match away by winning three of the four singles matches that went to a third set tie-breaker, one of which included sophomore Doug Edwards (Western HS) defeating defending state champion Daniel Coehlo (6-4, 2-6, 11-9). Cerritos will now travel to face defending team state champion Ventura College for a 2:00 p.m. non-conference match on Thursday.

In singles play, Cerritos won four of the six matches, as well as three that went to a third set. In addition to the win by Edwards in the #1 spot, sophomore Nik Bote (Mayfair HS) fought back after losing the first set in the #4 position and came away with a 3-6, 6-0, 10-6 win over Camilo Almeida. Sophomore David Sim (Cerritos HS) pulled away in the tie-breaker against Marlo Carrillo in the #6 spot and posted a 6-4, 4-6, 10-1 victory.

Sophomore Jason Wall (Lakewood HS) dropped his third straight three-set match, this time to Diego Miranda, 1-6, 7-5, 12-14, while sophomore Carlos Gomez (Kennedy HS) swept Sam Pirani, 6-4, 6-4.

Edwards and Wall, who advanced to the finals of the state championships last season, dropped to 1-2 on the year after being defeated by Coehlo and Yair Banuelos, 3-6, 6-7 (5). But the Falcons did win the other two doubles matches, which clinched the victory. Bote and Gomez posted a 6-3, 6-2 win, while sophomore Matt Jun (Cerritos HS) and freshman Tim Lee (Whitney HS) matched their score for a victory.
