Facing two of the top teams in Southern California this
week, the Cerritos College men's tennis team not only
had to deal with defending state champion Ventura
College on Thursday, they were also victims of the
elements. Playing in cold and windy conditions on the
road, the Falcons found themselves playing
competitively, but unable to outlast the Pirates in two
crucial three-set singles matches. The end result was a
7-2 loss for Cerritos (3-1), who will open South Coast
Conference action next Tuesday with a trio of newcomers
to the South Coast Conference. The Falcons will travel
to Victor Valley College in their conference opener at
2:00 p.m., as the Rams join the SCC. In addition, Mt.
San Jacinto and powerhouse College of the Desert are
also new to the conference.
In singles action, Cerritos looked to come away with wins in
the top two positions, which possibly could have changed
the complexity of the entire match. Sophomore
Doug Edwards
(Western HS) split his first two sets in the #1
position against Zach Taylor and was leading in the
third-set tiebreaker. But Taylor was able to come away
with a 4-6, 6-3, 11-9 win over Edwards, while freshman
Tim Lee (Whitney HS) was
facing the same situation in the #2 spot. After winning
the first set, 6-3 over Hassan Abbas, Lee dropped the
next set, 4-6 and eventually was defeated in the
tie-breaker, 13-11. Those two marathon matches clinched
the match for the Pirates, who won five of the six
singles competitions.
The lone singles winner for the Falcons was sophomore
David Sim
(Cerritos HS), who came out victorious in his
three-set match against Juan Arteaga, 6-4, 6-7 (5),
10-6.
In doubles action, Edwards and sophomore
Jason Wall
(Lakewood HS) were defeated for the third time
in four matches this year, as they fell to Abbas and
Taylor, 8-4. Just as in singles play, the doubles won
one of the matches, with Lee and sophomore Matt June
(Cerritos HS) coning away with an 8-4 win in the #3
spot.
