For the fifth year in a row, the Cerritos College
men's tennis team opened the South Coast Conference
season with a win. In fact, in the last four years,
the Falcons have won every one of their conference
matches, as fifth-year head coach
Alvin Kim
ran his SCC undefeated streak to 34 matches in a
row. The team's 9-0 win at Victor Valley College on
Tuesday also improved their season record to 4-1.
Cerritos will look to keep their streak alive on
Thursday at 2:00 p.m. when they host the second of
three new teams to join the SCC, Mt. San Jacinto
College.
Although it was status quo for the team regarding the outcome
of the match, there were several new looks to the
lineup that appeared to go smoothly. However, the
trip to Victorville was not without an oddity of its
own, as the team had to drive through snow to get to
Victor Valley College and then played in 35-degree
weather.
Several alterations were made to the singles lineup, due to
injury, while the biggest change was splitting up
the doubles team that advanced to the state
championships last year after getting off to a 1-3
start. Sophomores
Doug
Edwards (Western HS) and
Jason Wall (Lakewood HS)
paired with their new doubles partners and won
easily. Edwards, the team's #1 singles player,
joined forces with freshman
Will Cho
(Whitney HS) in the #2 position and posted
an 8-0 win. As for Wall, he teamed with sophomore
Nik
Bote (Mayfair HS) in the top
spot and teamed for an 8-1 win.
Cerritos won the match after sweeping singles play, which was
why they didn't play a best of three doubles
matches. Edwards (6-1, 6-1), Wall (6-0, 6-1) and
Bote (6-0, 6-0) accounted for the top three singles
position, while the Falcons lost just five games in
singles play collectively. Sophomore
Carlos
Gomez (Kennedy HS) and
Matt Jun
(Cerritos HS) each won their matches, 6-1,
6-0, while Cho shut out his opponent, 6-0, 6-0. Jun
and Gomez did not lose a game in their doubles
match.
