02.24.09 - TEAM RESPONDS FROM LOSS WITH 9-0 WIN

After absorbing an uncharacteristic South Coast Conference loss, the Cerritos College men's tennis team responded at home on Tuesday afternoon with a convincing 9-0 win over El Camino College. The Falcons, who had won 34 consecutive matches over four years, had that streak snapped last Thursday, but improved to 5-2 on the season and 2-1 in SCC play with the victory. Next up is perennial powerhouse and newcomer to the conference, College of the Desert, as the team faces the Roadrunners on the road this Thursday.

In the victory over the Warriors, Cerritos withstood a pair of three-set matches at the top of the singles ladder, while they won convincingly the rest of the way. Using an all-sophomore singles lineup, Doug Edwards (Western HS) and Nik Bote (Mayfair HS) needed to go three sets to win. Edwards defeated Tsuyoshi, 6-1, 2-6, 11-9 in the top spot, while Bote was victorious in his first match of the season at the #2 position, 6-1, 5-7, 10-4.

It was business as usual the rest of the way with the trio of Jason Wall (Lakewood HS), Carlos Gomez (Kennedy HS) and David Sim (Cerritos HS) all winning, 6-1, 6-0. As for Matt Jun (Cerritos HS), he defeated Jonathan Chin, 6-2. 6-1.

In doubles action, the pairing of Edwards and Wall reunited for a 6-0, 6-1 win, while Bote and Gomez shut out Jon Duarte and Tim Kang, 6-0, 6-0. The match was closed out when Jun and freshman Will Cho (Whitney HS) posted a 6-2, 6-2 win in the #3 position.
