Coming off the
best overall season in Cerritos College men's tennis
history, the Falcons went up against another team
that is much-improved this season. The Falcons,
competing in their first match of the season,
defeated Cypress College, 5-4, despite seeing the
returning state runner-up doubles team drop a close
match. Cerritos (1-0) will now host Glendale College
at 2:00 p.m. on Thursday.
Returning doubles
team Doug Edwards (Western HS)
and Jason Wall (Lakewood HS),
who reached the state championship match last season
knew that the team had clinched the victory during
their match, but wanted to continue the success they
had started last season. But they were defeated, 9-7
by Sam Tozer and Deondre Moss in the #1 doubles
match. The close match didn't surprise fifth-year
Falcon head coach Alvin Kim.
"This is one of
the best Cypress teams I have ever seen - including
the ones I played on," said Kim, who played for the
Chargers during his collegiate days.
The teams split
the six singles matches, as freshman Tim Lee won in
the #2 position over Moss, 6-1, 6-3, while sophomore
Nik Bote (Mayfair HS)
posted a 7-6 (4), 6-4 win in the #4 position.
Sophomore Carlos Gomez (Kennedy
HS) came away with a hard-fought 4-6, 6-2, 6-4
win in the #5 spot. Edwards, who played in the #1
position, suffered a 3-6, 5-7 (5) loss to Tozer,
while Wall (7-5, 4-6, 6-7 (10)) was defeated by Ben
Thompson-Star.
In doubles play,
the Falcons won the other two matches, which
clinched the team victory. Lee teamed with sophomore
Matt Jun (Cerritos HS) for
an 8-3 win in the #3 spot to close out the team win,
while Bote and Gomez registered an 8-2 victory.
