After fighting to
win a close match against Cypress College in their
season opener on Tuesday, the Cerritos College
men's tennis team wasted little time in defeating
visiting Glendale College, 7-2 on Thursday
afternoon. The Falcons (2-0) clinched the match by
winning the first five singles matches, while they
capped off the day by capturing two of the three
doubles matches. As for the Vaqueros, they were
playing without their #1 singles player, and are
usually a team to contend with in the playoffs. In
fact, Glendale defeated the Falcons in the playoffs
three seasons ago. The team will now travel to Pt.
Loma Nazarene University for a scrimmage on Tuesday
afternoon.
Leading the Falcons
in singles play were sophomore Doug Edwards
(Western HS) and freshman Tim Lee
(Whitney HS), who registered straight set wins
in the top two singles positions. Edwards recorded a
6-0, 6-4 win over Emanuel Haug, while Lee was consistent
in his 6-2, 6-2 victory over Ryan Stanbury. It was also
a straight set day for sophomores Nik Bote
(Mayfair HS) and David Sim (Cerritos
HS), while sophomore Carlos Gomez
(Kennedy HS) won in straight sets but did so
after a tie-breaker in the second set. Bote (6-4, 6-1)
and Sim (6-1, 6-2) had relatively easy matches, with
Gomez needed to go to a tie-breaker in his 6-2, 7-6 (3)
win.
It was almost a
straight sweep, but sophomore Jason Wall
(Lakewood HS) couldn't complete his comeback in
the #3 position, and fell to Joe Tresierras, 1-6, 6-2,
0-6.
In doubles action,
top-seeded Edwards and Wall returned to their winning
ways, as they posted an 8-2 win, while Bote and Gomez
also recorded an 8-2 win. Edwards and Wall, who advanced
to the state championship match last season, were upset
on Tuesday, but played very well in their win. Sophomore
Matt Jun (Cerritos HS) and
freshman William Cho (Whitney HS)
were defeated, 3-8 in the #3 doubles match.
