The Cerritos College men's tennis team had their
hands full in their South Coast Conference home
match on Tuesday afternoon against Mt. San Antonio
College. After winning four of the six singles
matches, the Falcons were able to clinch the match
with their top doubles team. But the Mounties made
it close, winning the other two doubles matches in
three sets for a 5-4 Cerritos win. The Falcons (7-3
overall, 4-2 SCC) will host Victor Valley College
next Tuesday at 2:00 p.m. to start the second round
of conference play.
In singles play,
the Falcons were able to avoid a split, as sophomore
Carlos Gomez (Kennedy HS) came
back in his #4 ladder position from one set down
against JP Arregiado. After dropping the first set,
4-6, Gomez stormed back to won the second set, 6-4
and then pulled away in the tie-breaker, 10-5. Add
to that a 6-1, 6-2 win by sophomore

Edwards (Western HS) in the #1
position and a 6-0, 6-1 win by sophomore
Jason Wall
(Lakewood HS) in the #3 spot, and Cerritos
was on their way to a win. Sophomore
Matt Jun
(Cerritos HS) also won in straight sets,
7-5, 6-2 in the #6 position.
Edwards and Wall clinched the match for the Falcons
in doubles action, as they posted a 6-0, 6-1 win
over Jose Quiros and Mark Peralta. But the Mounties
made the match close, as Eric Lu and Arregiado
registered a 6-4, 4-6, 10-7 win over sophomore
Nik
Bote (Mayfair HS) and Gomez,
while Jun and freshman
Will Cho
(Whitney HS) were defeated, 2-6, 7-6 (5),
7-10.
