When the first round of the South Coast
Conference men's tennis season opened a month
ago, the weather was less than kind to the
players. For Cerritos College, their first
encounter against Victor Valley College was met
with cold and windy conditions, which resulted
in a loss to the Rams. With the weather now more
pleasant, the Falcons showed their true
abilities, as they defeated a shorthanded Victor
Valley team, 7-0. The win improves the team's
record to 8-3 overall and 5-2 in SCC action.
Cerritos will now take a break from conference
play and host four-year school Lewis & Clark
(ID) University in a non-conference match at
3:30 p.m. on Wednesday.
In the win over Victor Valley, the Falcons made
quick work in both singles and doubles play,
with sophomores
Nik Bote
(Mayfair HS) and
Matt Jun
(Cerritos HS) winning, 6-0, 6-0 in the
#3 and #5 spots, respectively. Cerritos received
forfeit wins in the #6 singles and #3 doubles
positions, but the outcome had been decided long
before that. At the top of the ladder, sophomore
Doug
Edwards (Western HS)
posted a 6-1, 6-2 win, while sophomore
Jason
Wall (Lakewood HS) moved
back up to his customary #2 position and
recorded a 6-0, 6-1 victory. Sophomore
David Sim
(Cerritos HS) also had little
resistence in a 6-1. 6-2 win.
In doubles play, Edwards and Wall showed their
smooth play together with an 8-2 victory, while
Bote and Jun came away with an 8-4 win.
