The Cerritos
College men's tennis team defeated El Camino
College, 9-0 in a South Coast Conference match
Tuesday afternoon to win their fifth match in a row.
The Falcons (10-3 overall, 7-2 SCC) will now face
the top-rated team in the state, College of the
Desert at home on Thursday. Cerritos, looking to
make fare better than their 8-1 showing in their
first round loss, know they are facing a team full
of international players. However, the Falcons feel
as though they are playing their best tennis of the
season and are ready for the challenge.
In their defeat of
the Warriors, Cerritos played singles without
sophomore
Doug
Edwards (Western HS), who had
been playing in the #1 position all season. Freshman
Tim
Lee (Whitney HS) moved into
the top spot in Tuesday and defeated Tsuyoshi
Nagaoka in straight sets, 6-4, 6-3, while the rest
of the team followed suit.
Sophomore
Jason Wall
(Lakewood HS) won his third match in as
many tries in the #2 position, a 6-1, 6-1 decision,
while sophomore
Carlos
Gomez (Kennedy HS) was
successful in his first match at #3 by posting a
6-1, 6-0 win. Sophomore David Sim (Cerritos HS)
posted a 6-0, 6-0 shutout, with freshman
Will Cho
(Whitney HS) completing the sweep in
singles with a 6-0, 6-2 decision. El Camino did not
have a #6 singles player.
In doubles play,
Edwards and Wall won in the top position by an 8-6
score, while Gomez teamed with sophomore
Nik Bote
(Mayfair HS) for an 8-0 win.
