Although the Cerritos College men's tennis team
suffered a 7-2 South Coast Conference defeat at the
hands of top-ranked College of the Desert on
Thursday afternoon, they kept most of the sets
close. The Falcons (10-4 overall, 7-3 SCC) will now
travel to Long Beach City College next Tuesday for a
2:30 p.m. conference match. Three of the team's four
losses this season have come against two of the
highest-ranked teams in the state.
Despite dropping the five singles losses to the
Roadrunners in straight sets, the Falcons extended
their opponents in every match, with three of them
going to tie-breakers in the second set. Freshman
Tim
Lee (Whitney HS) was the lone
singles victor for Cerritos, as he posted a 6-4, 6-4
win despite fighting through an injury.
Sophomores
Nik Bote
(Mayfair HS),
Carlos
Gomez (Kennedy HS) and
David Sim
(Cerritos HS) all pushed their second sets
to tie-breakers at the bottom half of the ladder.
Bote was defeated, 5-7, 6-7 (2) in the #4 position,
while Gomez (1-6, 6-7(5)) and Sim (3-6, 6-7(4)) also
played well.
In doubles action, sophomores
Doug
Edwards (Western HS) and
Jason Wall (Lakewood HS) won
their pro-set match, 8-4, while the other two
matches were also close. Bote and Gomez were
defeated, 8-6, while Lee and sophomore
Matt Jun
(Cerritos HS) were defeated, 8-4.
