Edwards (Western HS) and
Jason Wall (Lakewood HS) moved
two more steps closer to playing for the Southern
California championship, as they won two matches on
Friday. The #2-seeded sophomores are now in the
semi-finals and will face College of the Desert's
Cesar Uaya and Francisco Stuardo, who they have
faced once this season and dropped an 8-4 decision.
The semi-finals and finals will by played Saturday
at Long Beach City College. The top eight doubles
teams automatically advance to the state
championships, which will be held at American River
College next weekend.
Edwards and Wall
opened the day by defeating another COD team, Alonso
Leon and Bruno Araujo, 6-3, 6-3 and then defeated
Ventura College brothers Juan and Pedro Arteaga,
6-3, 7-5 (5) to advance to the semi-finals. A win by
the duo and they could be facing #1-seeded Daniel
Coehlo and Yair Banuelos of Riverside College, who
posted a 6-3, 7-5 (6) win against them in the
Southern California Team Playoffs two and a half
weeks ago. The other team in the semifinals is
Richard Tetteh and Taylor Witt, who Edwards and Wall
beat, 6-0, 6-1 to capture the Ojai Tournament title
last week.
The Falcons other
doubles team, sophomores
Nik Bote
(Mayfair HS) and
Carlos
Gomez (Kennedy HS) were
eliminated in the Round of 16 by Tetteh and Witt,
6-4, 3-6, 6-2 in their first match of the day.
