Although they were
defeated in the championship match of the Southern
California Championship, Cerritos College sophomore
doubles team
Doug
Edwards (Western HS) and
Jason Wall (Lakewood HS) will
receive the #2-seed from the South for the upcoming
state championships, which will be played at
American River College next weekend.
Edwards and Wall,
seeded #2 for the regionals, received a default
victory over College of the Desert's Cesar Uaya and
Francisco Stuardo in the semi-finals to advance them
to the finals. Stuardo, who was also playing in the
singles tournament, was forced to default due to an
injury. That sent Edwards and Wall to the
championship match, where they faced Daniel Coehlo
and Yair Banuelos of Riverside College.
The matchup
against the Tigers top doubles team was the third of
the season for Edwards and Wall, who lost had
already lost to them twice. It was more of the same,
as Coehlo and Banuelos posted a 7-5, 6-4 victory for
the championship. Edwards and Wall, champions of the
Ojai Tournament, will now look to get back into the
state championship doubles match, where they were
defeated for the title last year.
