Last year,
Cerritos College men's tennis players
Doug
Edwards (Western HS) and
Jason Wall (Lakewood HS)
surprised the state by defeating some of the
toughest teams around to come within one match of
winning the state doubles championship. Not able to
sneak up on anyone this year, the sophomore duo
shook off a slow start to the season and picked up
steam as the season progressed. The duo advanced to
the finals of the Southern California Championships
and became the first Falcon doubles team to win the
Ojai Tournament.
Just one win away
from advancing to the state championship match,
Edwards and Wall were defeated by the state's top
doubles team, Hank Bessinger and Joao Noguiera of
Fresno City College at American River College on
Saturday. However, the duo saw their shot at the
state title come to an end when they were defeated
in a marathon match, 7-5, 2-6, 3-6. With the lead
going back and forth the entire match, Edwards and
Wall were just unable to overcome the Fresno City
team, who went on to win the state championship in
straight sets.
