12.09.09 - Doug Wells named State Track Coach of the Year

Cerritos College Director of Track and Field Doug Wells has been named the 2009 California Community College Cross Country & Track Coaches Association (5CTCA) Men's Track and Field Coach of the Year. Wells helped lead the Falcons to a share of second place finish at the state championships this past season. Along with his duties with the men's team, he helped lead the women's team to their second state title in a row and third in four years, while both won the South Coast Conference championship.

Wells, who will be starting his 20th season as the Falcons director, will be honored at the Annual 5CTCA meeting, which will be held on December 12, 2009 in Las Vegas, NV.

Over the years, Wells has been honored to serve as a coach at the national level and as recently as 2006, he was 
chosen as the Head Manager for the U.S. National Track and Field Team and guided them at the NACAC Under-23 Team, which was held in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic. Wells was also selected by a special staff selection meeting of the International Competition Committee at the USA Track and Field National Convention...[more]

05.16.09 - Tremendous second day leads to second place
After a slow start on the first day of the California Community College men's track and field state championships at College of San Mateo, the Cerritos College men's track and field team picked up huge results to finish in a tie for second place. The Falcons, who finished with 58 team points, joined Moorpark College for second place, while Riverside College won the title with 68 team points. Along the way, the Falcons set a new school record, as they finished in first and second place in the decathlon, while freshman Torion Bailey (Mayfair HS) won the 800 meters...[more]

05.09.09 - Cerritos places fourth in Southern Cal finals
The Cerritos College men's track and field had one Southern California champion on Saturday at Mt. San Antonio College, as the team finished in fourth place. The Falcons, who won their first South Coast Conference championship in school history two weeks ago, compiled 65 team points to place fourth. Sophomore sprinter Kelsey Caesar (Klein Forest (TX) HS/Cal State Long Beach) was the lone champion, as he won the 400 meters in a time of 47.21. Caesar also qualified in the 200 meters by coming in fourth place. Freshman thrower Jeramey Cutler (Lakewood HS) is the only other two-event qualifier...[more]

05.02.09 - Falcons have 22 entries in SoCal Finals
Coming off their first South Coast Conference championship in school history, the Cerritos College men's track and field team have qualified 22 entries for the Southern California Championships, which will be held next Saturday at Mt. San Antonio College. The top eight finishers in lane events and top 12 in field advance from the Southern California Preliminaries, which were held on Saturday at Mt. San Antonio College...[more]

04.24.09 - Cerritos wins conference championship
For the first time in the last 13 years, a school other than Mt. San Antonio College has won the South Coast Conference Men's Track and Field Championship. The Cerritos College men's track team, winners of five events, dethroned the Mounties, while compiling 247 team points, with Mt. SAC a distant second place with 180.5 team points. The Falcon qualifiers will now advance to the Southern California Preliminaries, which will be held next Saturday at Mt. San Antonio. The top six from each event advance to the prelims, while there will be a selection of automatic qualifiers that will be decided at a seeding meeting...[more]

04.18.09 - Small squad competes in tune-up meet
The Cerritos College men's track and field team is preparing for the South Coast Conference Preliminaries, which start Tuesday at Mt. San Antonio. In their final meet prior to the prelims, a small contingent of Falcons competed in the VS Athletics Beach Invitational, which took place at Cerritos College, but was hosted by Cal State Long Beach...[more]

04.11.09 - Falcons tuning up for conference prelims
With the South Coast Conference Preliminaries just two weeks away, the Cerritos College men's track and field team continues to tune up for the most important meets of the season. They sent a partial squad to the Mt. San Antonio Relays over the weekend and had very promising results. The Falcons will now compete in the Long Beach Relays at Cerritos this Friday and Saturday in their final meet before the conference prelims...[more]

04.04.09 - Cerritos does well up north
Led by a pair of first place finishes, the Cerritos College men's track and field team did very well at the 1st Annual American River Invitational in Sacramento on Saturday. In addition to the two first place finishes, the Falcons also had three second place and one third place finish. The team will now compete in the prestigious Mt. 03.27.09 - Falcons win conference meet
The Cerritos College men's track and field team outscored all the other eight teams at the South Coast Conference Preview Meet to come in first place on Friday at Compton College. The Falcons compiled 191.5 team points to pull away from second place finisher Mt. San Antonio College, who finished with 170 team points. Cerritos will now travel north to compete in the Nike Invitational in Sacramento on Saturday...[more]

03.25.09 - Nicholas Armstrong wins SoCal decathlon championship
Photo of Nicholas ArmstrongCerritos College sophomore decathlete Nicholas Armstrong (Long Beach Poly HS) compiled 6479 points at the Southern California decathlon Championships on Tuesday and Wednesday at Cerritos College to win the championship. His point total is also the third-highest in school history. Sophomore teammate David Thomas (Cerritos HS) finished sixth out of the 32 entries with 5595 points. The two athletes collected 13 team points toward the Southern California Championships, which will take place at Mt. San Antonio College on May 9. They have both also advanced to the state championships, as the top six finishers qualified. Prior to that, the Falcon track team will compete in the SCC Preview Meet this Friday at Compton College at noon...[more]

03.21.09 - Cerritos does well with small squad
Although they entered a smaller team than usual, the Cerritos College men's track and field still did well at the California Relays, which the school hosted over the weekend. The Falcons, who will also host the Southern California Decathlon Championships this Tuesday and Wednesday, won one event and placed second in two others over the weekend...[more]

03.14.09 - Last event wins meet for Falcons
The Cerritos College men's track team did exactly what they needed to do in order to hold off host Moorpark College in a four-way meet hosted by the Raiders on Saturday. The Falcons held a slim margin prior to the final event of the day - the 1600-meter relay race. On the strength of their third place finish time of 3:20.46, Cerritos scored six team points, while Moorpark came in fourth place, good for five team points. The final tally of the meet had the Falcons pulling out a 177-176.5 team score victory over the Raiders, while they also defeated West Los Angeles College (177-136.5) and El Camino College, 177-130. Cerritos will now host the California Relays this weekend, starting at 9:00 a.m. on Friday and concluding on Saturday...[more]

03.01.09 - Cerritos wins pair of events at USC Invitational
Facing both four-year universities and community colleges, the Cerritos College men's track and field team captured first place in two events, while they came in second place in three other events at the USC Invitational, which was held at Loker Stadium-Cormwell Field on Sunday. After such a strong performance, the Falcons will now return home for a four-team meet on Friday at noon. 02.21.09 - Falcons put on good showing at invitational

Cerritos College Men and Women's Track & Field put on a good showing at their own invitational on Saturday.Freshman sprinter Kelsey Caesar (Klein Forest, TX HS) captured both the 200 meters and 400 meters as the Cerritos College men's track and field team turned in a good all-around showing at the Cerritos Invitational over the weekend. In addition to the two wins by Caesar, sophomore Qualaun Reed (Cabrillo HS) won the 3000-meter steeplechase event. The Falcons will now travel to the USC Invitational, which will start at 9:00 a.m. on Friday.

Caesar posted a time of 21.58 in the 200 meters, while his time of 47.56 beat everyone in the 400 meters. Joining Caear in the 200 meters were freshman William English (Montebello HS) and sophomore Kristen Joseph (Canyon Springs, NV HS), who finished fifth and sixth, respectively. As for Reed, his time of 9:52.25 was good enough to win the race. Over the weekend, there was one school record broken, as freshman thrower Vincent Huitt (Downey HS) set a new record in the weight throw with a distance of 42' 3"...[more]
