Sophomore jumper
Joshua
Muwwakkil (Warren
HS) became the first Cerritos College men's
track and field athlete to win the long jump state
championship, as he recorded a jump of 24' 4 1/2" to win
the title at Bakersfield College over the weekend at the
California Commission on Athletics Men's Track
Championship presented by U.S. Bank.
Muwwakkil also tied for first place in the high jump at
6' 10", but placed third in the competition due to the
amount of misses, which determined the tie-breaker.
The Falcons, who sent six athletes
to compete in seven events, saw all of them medal and
record points, as the team placed ninth overall with 37
team points. City College of San Francisco won the team
state championship with 85 points, followed by Moorpark
College with 81 team points with Sacramento City College
(79), Long Beach City College (77) and American River
College (48) rounding out the top five.
Muwwakkil watched as Moorpark's Rex
Bridgeforth recorded a leap of 24' 2" in his second
jump, and in order to capture the state title, he would
have to turn in a person best. In last week's Southern
California Championship, Muwwakkil needed a PR to win
that title and he did, so flair for the dramatic suited
him nicely as he turned in his best jump ever for the
championship. But in the high jump, Muwwakkil was only
able to share the title, but was awarded third place
points after his total missed attempts proved to be the
most among the three who successfully cleared 6' 10"
In the triple jump, sophomore
Lyndon Wyse
(Dorsey HS)
concluded a stellar career with a third place in the
triple jump at 48' 5", which was more than two feet
better than his person best jump. He entered the event
with the eighth longest jump of all the entrants, but
rose to the occasion for his third place finish.
Another Falcon who rose to the
occasion was sophomore
Antoine Revell
(Serra HS),
who was the ninth entrant into the 400-meter
intermediate hurdles race and responded with a sixth
place finish in a time of 55.94. The top four finishers
from the Southern California and Northern California
championships automatically qualified for the state
championships, while the faster fifth place finish from
the two championship races filled the last spot, which
was Revell. For 37-year old
Rafer Weaver
(Banning HS),
he accomplished a great many goals and concluded his
Falcon career with a seventh place finish in the 800
meters with a personal best time of 1:55.15.
In the 400 meters, freshman
Kenyon
Stewart (Cabrillo
HS) ran a solid race to place fourth in a
time of 47.88, while sophomore
Vincent Rojas
(Long Beach
Millikan HS) posted a time of 32:36.41 in
the 10,000 meters to place fourth.
