At the South Coast
Conference Preliminaries,
which where held at Cerritos
College on Saturday, the
Falcon men's track and field
team had three individual
winners, while they have
advanced 12 individuals to
the finals, which will also
beheld at Cerritos on
Friday, starting at 12:00
p.m. The top 12 finishers
in events that were not
finals, advance to the
championships. Three events
were finals, which
accumulate points toward the
team championship, and the
Falcons picked up 30 on the
day, which leads all teams.
Freshman distance runner
Daniel Clifford-Sorenson
(Lakewood HS) not
only won the 3000 meter
steeplechase race, but he
did it in a school record
time of 9:15.38, which was
11 seconds faster than the
old record of 9:26.24, set
in 1977 by Ralph
Kolthoff. Entering
the race with the third
fastest time in the
conference,
Clifford-Sorenson beat out
rivals Daniel Belay (El
Camino College) by nine
seconds and Sergio Lares of
East Los Angeles College by
21 seconds. Freshman
teammate
Casey McCombs (Lakewood
HS) came in fifth place
in the race with a time of
10:23.13, his fastest of the
season. In addition,
Clifford-Sorenson won the
10,000 meters with a time of
32:51.73, which earned the
Falcons another 10 points
toward the conference
championship. He finished 25
seconds ahead of his closest
competitor.
In the
field events, freshman
Devin Farrow (Valley
Christian HS) won the
discus with a toss of 139'
3, while sophomore
Benjamin Smith
(Cypress HS) and
freshman
Cody Lewis (Lakewood
HS) finished in second
and ninth, respectively.
Smith had a throw of 120'
9", while Lewis finished at
96' 9". Farrow also came in
second place in the shot put
at 46' 2 1/2", while Lewis
was ninth (32' 6 3/4"). It
was Lewis who earned the
team six points for his
third place finish in the
javelin finals with a throw
of 157' 7", while Smith
picked up four team points
with a fifth place finish at
147' 2".
Others
who advanced to the finals
included sophomore sprinter
Genoa Dill (Compton
HS), who came in fifth
place in the 100 meters
(10.88) and seventh in the
200 meters (21.91), while
freshman
Brandon Dickson
(Long Beach Millikan HS)
also ran the 100 meters and
came in 10th place at 11.17.
Dickson also placed eighth
in the long jump at 19' 11
3/4". In the 800 meters,
sophomore
Dennis Drisdom
(Dominguez HS)
placed sixth in 1:59.56,
while freshman
Miguel Ortega (John
Glenn HS) was 11th at
2:02.19. Freshman
Jonathan Dillard
(Lakewood HS) ran
the 1500 meters and his time
of 4:10.37 was good for
seventh place.
