Cerritos College freshman long jumper
Kristen
Joseph (Canyon Springs , NV HS)
checked in with the second longest jump in school
history a 24' 9.75" to capture the state
championship at the California Community College
Athletic Association Men's Track and Field State
Championships on Saturday at Cerritos College. The
state title by Joseph was the second in three years
in the long jump by a Falcon, as Josh
Muwwakkil won the state championship in
2006.
As a team, the Falcons finished in 10th place with
29 team points, with Riverside Community College
winning the state championship with 112 team points.
The championship leap by Joseph beat out second
place Neelon Greenwood of Sacramento City College,
who turned in a distance of 24' 9". Joseph was one
of three jumpers the Falcons had entered in the
state championship, with the other two finishing in
sixth place in their respective events. Freshman
Nicholas Armstrong (Long Beach Poly
HS) placed sixth in the high jump at 6' 7",
while freshman
Bruce McCall (Norwalk
HS) saw his jump of 47' 6.25 inches earn him a
sixth place finish.
In an upset, sophomore distance runner
Daniel Clifford-Sorenson (Lakewood
HS) had to settle for second place in the
3000-meter steeplechase, as he turned in a time of
9:38.88, which was 23 seconds off his school record
time. He was beat out by Jason Engler of American
River College, whose time of 9:23.37 earned him the
state title.
The final Cerritos entry was sophomore
Cody
Lewis (Lakewood HS), who
placed fourth in the decathlon with a personal
record 6315 points. His best events were the discus,
where he came in second place with a throw of 115',
while he came in third place in the high jump at 6'
2.75". Lewis also collected a trio of fourth place
finishes in the long jump (20' 10.5"), pole vault
(12' 11") and javelin (168' 4").
