Facing both
four-year universities and community colleges, the
Cerritos College men's track and field team captured
first place in two events, while they came in second
place in three other events at the USC Invitational,
which was held at Loker Stadium-Cormwell Field on
Sunday. After such a strong performance, the Falcons
will now return home for a four-team meet on Friday
at noon. Joining Cerritos will be Saddleback
College, El Camino College and Orange Coast College.
In the 400-meter
relay race, the quartet of sophomores
Qwynn
Montgomery (Long Beach Millikan HS),
Kelsey Caesar (Klein (TX HS/Cal
State Long Beach) and Kristen
Joseph (Canyon Springs (NV) HS),
along with freshman
William
English (Montebello HS) beat
out all of the competition to post a time of 41.71.
Also running in the race were teams from Cal State
Fullerton, Cal State Long Beach and USC.
In the javelin,
sophomore
David
Thomas (Cerritos HS) won the
event with a distance of 158' 2", while sophomore
teammate
Nicholas Armstrong (Long Beach Poly
HS) was right behind in third place with a
throw of 152'.
A pair of other
relay teams came in second place, with freshman
Enis Gilbeau (Bellflower HS),
Montgomery, sophomore
Brandon
Dickson (Long Beach Millikan HS)
and English trailing only Cal State Fullerton with a
time of 1:29.63 in the 800-meter relay. As for the
1600-meter sprint medley relay team of English,
Joseph, Caesar and freshman
Torion
Bailey (Mayfair HS), they
posted a time of 3:25.49 and were only beat by USC.
In individual
events, Joseph came in second place in the long jump
at 24' 6 1/4", while freshman thrower
Jeramey
Cutler (Lakewood HS) placed
third in both the shot put (48' 4 3/4") and discus
(153' 11). Sophomore hurdler
Bruce
McCall (Norwalk HS) placed
fourth in the 400-meter hurdles (56.39) and sixth in
the 100-meter hurdles in a time of 15.34. The duo of
sophomores
Geovanni
Popoca (Valencia HS) and
Qualaun Reed (Cabrillo HS)
finished in fourth (9:10.12) and fifth (9:10.29),
respectively in the 3000 meters.
