Cerritos Cross Country (2009):
Named 1st Team All-South Coast
Conference… Helped the team finish 10th
at the state championships with an 82nd
place finish in a time of 21:38… Posted a time
of 21:25 at the Southern California
Championships, good for a 20th place
finish, while his time of 21:05 was the
fifth-fastest time at the South Coast Conference
Championships, which helped the team come in
third place… Won the UC San Diego Opener by
turning in a time of 22:49, while he led the
team at the Mt. San Antonio Invitational with a
time of 22:34, good for 27th place…
Finished in 53rd place at the Orange
Coast Classic with a time of 22:02, while his
finish time of 22:26 was good for 59th
place at the Fresno Invitational…..
Chico State Cross Country
(2008): Was a
red-shirt at Chico State…..
El Rancho HS:
During
his senior year, he finished eight at the CIF
Championships after earning 1st Team
All-Del Rio League recognition… Turned in a
personal best time of 14:57 that year and was
voted the team’ Most Valuable Player… Clocked an
impressive 15:38 at the Clovis Invitational in
Fresno, as well as a sub-15 minute mark at the
Woodbridge Invite in Irvine... Posted an eighth
place finish at the CIF Championships his junior
year while also earning 1st Team
all-league honors and helped the team win the
league title… While on the track, he advanced to
the CIF Prelims in the 1600 meters and was voted
the team’s MVP his senior year… Registered
personal best times in the 400 meters (52.0),
800 meters (2:00), 1600 meters (4:20.0) and 3200
meters (9:30)…..
Personal:
Most memorable moments were when he was voted
the cross country and track team’ MVP the same
year, as well as then he turned in the school’s
all-time fastest time of 4:57 in a three-mile
race… Is working on a minor in history and would
like to transfer back to Chico State… Aspires to
be a physical education teacher… Likes to run
and go to the movies in his spare time…
Nicknamed “Big Papi”… Has one brother – Gerardo
(23)… Is the son of Gerardo and Rosa Zapien…
