Seeded #8 in the Southern California
Regional Playoffs, the Cerritos College men's water polo
team saw their season come to an end when they were
defeated by conference foe Mt. San Antonio, 10-5 on
Thursday at Pasadena City College. The loss ends the

Both the Cerritos College men's and
women's water polo teams will be taking part in the
Southern California Regional Playoffs, which will begin
on Thursday at Pasadena City College. The top three
teams from the playoffs will advance to the state
championships, which will be played next week at Golden

11.07.09 - Cerritos loses in conference championship
match
After a couple of exciting wins
propelled them to the finals of the South Coast
Conference championship match, the Cerritos College
men's water polo team came up short in a 13-10 decision
to Long Beach City College in the finals on Saturday.
The Falcons (17-10), who defeated Los Angeles Trade-Tech
College (16-2) and Mt. San Antonio College (12-11 in
overtime) in the first two games on Friday, have now
advanced to the Southern California Regional Playoffs,
which start on Wednesday at Pasadena City College...[more]
10.24.09 - Falcons finish undefeated at tournament
On the strength of two close wins on
Saturday after a pair of victories on Friday, the
Cerritos College men's water polo team won their half of
the Golden West Tournament, which was played in the new
Falcon Aquatic Center. The Falcons (15-9) posted wins
over Fullerton (10-9) and Orange Coast (8-6), which will
help them in their upcoming South Coast Conference
Tournament, which takes place November 5-7 at Chaffey
College.
"We had a great
tournament," said head coach
Joe Abing.
"After our win over Fullerton, we only had a
two-game rest before playing Orange Coast. Both
teams have big wins this year over state-ranked
teams, and this creates positive momentum for us

10.23.09 - First day brings a pair of wins
Serving as one of the hosts for the
Golden West Tournament, the Cerritos College men's water
polo team had a chance to expose their new facility to
eight other schools, while also playing their first
games under the lights. The Falcons did not disappoint,
as they opened with a 13-8 win over Santa Ana College
and followed that with a 14-10 win over Los Angeles
Valley College to close out the first day of the
tournament. Cerritos (13-9) won their bracket and will
play the winners of the other two brackets on Saturday.
They open with a 9:10 a.m. game against Fullerton
College and follow that with a 12:25 p.m. contest
against Orange Coast College.
In the win over Santa Ana, freshman
Pat
McCarthy (Downey HS) scored
five times, as the Falcons pulled away after the two
teams were tied at five early in the third quarter.
It was McCarthy who scored a pair of goals to give
Cerritos a 7-5 lead, while freshmen
Shaun Farnell (Pacifica HS)
and PJ Gabayeron
(Cerritos HS) also scored to help the team
take a 9-6 lead into the fourth.

10.21.09 - Long Beach City too much for Cerritos
After falling behind early to rival
Long Beach City College in a South Coast Conference
men's water polo match on Wednesday afternoon, Cerritos
College found their scoring touch too late and suffered
a 12-7 loss at the Falcon Aquatic Center. The afternoon
also featured the college's dedication and ribbon
cutting ceremony, which followed the match. With the
loss, the Falcons dropped to 11-9 overall and 3-2 in
conference play, while the Vikings, ranked #4 in the
state, improved to 14-4 overall and 5-0 in the SCC.
Cerritos will now compete in the Golden West Tournament,
which will feature nine teams playing at Cerritos on
Friday and Saturday. The Falcons will open with Santa
Ana on Friday at 12:25 p.m. and then play Los Angeles
Valley College at 6:55 p.m., which is the final game of
the day.
In the match, the Falcons had no answer for the bigger
Vikings, who received three goals from Janko Jovanovich, as well
as a pair of goals from a trio of other players.
Additionally, LB City goalkeeper Duran Reid came up
with numerous close-range saves, including a pair
against freshman PJ Gabayeron
(Cerritos HS) in the third quarter when
Cerritos was looking to get back in the game...[more]
10.17.09 - Falcons win three of four at Cuesta
Tournament
On their way to the Cuesta
Tournament, the Cerritos College men's water polo team
made a stop at Ventura College for a non-conference
game. Despite six goals from sophomore
Cory Baccus
(Whittier HS), the Falcons dropped an 8-7
decision. But they rebounded by winning three of four
games at the tournament to improve their season record
to 11-8. Cerritos will now host rival Long Beach City
College in a South Coast Conference match at 4:15 p.m.

10.14.09 - Cerritos defeats LA Trade-Tech, 16-6
The Cerritos College men's water polo
team scored the first 11 goals in their South Coast
Conference match at the Cerritos Aquatic Center on
Wednesday afternoon against Los Angeles Trade-Tech
College. The lead allowed the coaching staff to move
several players around and the end result was a 16-6
victory that improved their season record to 8-6 overall
and 3-1 in conference play. The team will now travel to
Ventura College for a 2:30 p.m. non-conference game on
Thursday.
In opening the huge lead against the Beavers, the
Falcons saw sophomore
Ethan Klotzer (Downey HS),
along with freshmen
Jon Canizales (Whittier HS)
and
Shaun Farnell (Pacifica HS)
each score a pair of goals to open up a 6-0
advantage. It was 9-0 by the end of the first

10.10.09 - Falcons finish tournament with another win
After splitting their first two games
of the Citrus Tournament on Friday, the Cerritos College
men's water polo team won another game, while dropping
one on the second day. The Falcons (7-6) registered an
8-6 win over Los Angeles Valley College, while they were
defeated, 15-9 by Orange Coast College. The win over LA
Valley was the first in three games this season over the
Monarchs. Cerritos will now resume South Coast
Conference action at 4:15 p.m. on Wednesday when they

10.09.09 - Water polo splits first two games at
tournament
The Cerritos College men's water polo
team split their first two games at the Citrus
Tournament on Friday, as they dropped a 16-10 decision
to Ventura College before coming back for a 9-7 victory
over the host Owls. The Falcons (6-5) will conclude the
tournament on Saturday with two more games...[more]
10.08.09 - Cerritos records home win over Merced
In just their second match in their
new aquatic center, the Cerritos College men's water
polo team posted their first victory, a 13-6
non-conference victory over Merced College on Thursday
afternoon. The Falcons (5-4) will now enter the Citrus
Tournament this weekend.
Cerritos opened up a 4-1 first quarter
lead over the Blue Devils with four different players
scoring. In fact, in the first half alone, the Falcons
hit two cross bars and one post on three of four
possessions, while Merced also hit the goal post once.
However, the ball found the net twice in the second
quarter and Cerritos took a 6-2 lead into intermission.

The Cerritos College men's water polo
team dropped to 4-4 on the season after a 14-6 loss at
Mt. San Antonio College on Wednesday afternoon. In also
marked their first South Coast Conference loss of the
season, as the team fell to 2-1 in conference play. They
will look to get back to their winning ways on Thursday
when they host Merced College at 3:00 p.m. in a

09.30.09 - Goals scored in bunches in conference win
After opening up a 6-2 lead after the
first period, the Cerritos College men's water polo team
put the game out of reach with multiple goals and rolled
to an 18-8 South Coast Conference win at Chaffey College
on Wednesday. The Falcons (4-3 overall, 2-0 SCC) will
now travel to Mt. San Antonio College for a 4:15 p.m.

Led by five goals and five steals
from freshman PJ Gabayeron
(Cerritos HS), the Cerritos College
men's water polo team pulled away from El Camino
College, 14-10 in a South Coast Conference road game on
Wednesday. The win evened the team's record at 3-3, as
they continue conference play at Chaffey College next

09.12.09 - Falcons split four games at Golden West
The Cerritos College men's water polo
team picked up their first two wins on the year at the
Golden West Tournament over the weekend. But after
winning a pair of games on Friday, they suffered two
losses on Saturday, the second being a one-goal setback.
With the split, the Falcons are now 2-3 on the year and
will get 11 days off before their next match, which will
be their South Coast Conference opener at El Camino
College at 4:15 p.m. on September 23...[more]
09.04.09 - Men's water polo breaks in new pool
Although the Cerritos College men's
water polo team would loved to have recorded a win in
their first match in their new aquatics center, they did
provide everyone with several thrilling moments. The
Falcons trailed Los Angeles Valley College by as much as
7-2 in the first half before finally tying the score at
12 with seven seconds left in the fourth period.
However, they were unable to score in either of the two
three-minute overtime periods and dropped a 14-12
decision. The Cerritos (0-1) will now compete in the
Golden West Tournament next weekend.
With time running out in regulation, sophomore
Ethan
Klotzer (Downey HS) received a
long pass after LA Valley failed to get off a shot
before the shot clock expired and scored on Monarch
goalkeeper Trevor McHugh, who made numerous
point-blank saves to secure the win for LA Valley...[more]
