The Cerritos College men's water polo
team won three out of their four games at the Cuesta
Tournament this past weekend and were just one goal away
from winning all four. The Falcons opened with an 18-9
win over Southwestern College and then dropped a close
12-11 decision to Orange Coast College. On the second
day, Cerritos defeated both American River College
(13-12) and Citrus College (10-7) to run their season
record to 13-6, as they will resume South Coast
Conference action on Wednesday when they play host to El
Camino College at 3:00 p.m.

led a balanced scoring attack with four goals and three
steals, as 11 different players scored for Cerritos in
the win over Southwestern. Sophomore
Placido Diaz
(Bell
Gardens HS)
and freshman
Christian
Flores
(Montebello
HS)
each added three goals, while freshman goalkeeper
Billy Smith
(Cypress
HS)
turned away eight shots. It was Flores who scored four
goals and had three steals in the loss to the Pirates in
a game that went back and forth the entire way. Freshmen
AJ Abrego
(El
Rancho HS)
and
Jan-Michael
Pineda
(Cerritos
HS)
each chipped in with two goals, while Abrego led the
team with three assists.
For the second match in a row,
Cerritos had a close match and pulled it out against
American River, as Flores scored four times, while
sophomore
Omar Ramirez
(Bell
Gardens HS)
added three goals. Defensively, the Falcons had 12
steals, with Diaz posting four and Quintana adding three
in a solid effort. Smith even got involved in the act,
with one steal to go along with his three blocks. Abrego
was the scoring star in the win over Citrus, accounting
for six goals, with Flores picking up three of the other
goals and also leading the team with two steals. Smith
was huge in goal and made six blocks to help secure the
win. |
