The Cerritos College men's water polo
team was unable to hold off a second half scoring run by
Chaffey College in their South Coast Conference men's
water polo match at Cerritos on Wednesday afternoon. The
Falcons held a 6-5 halftime lead over the Panthers, only
to see that slip away, and dropped a 14-10 decision,
which allowed Chaffey to finish second in the SCC and
sent Cerritos to third place. With the loss, the
Falcons, ranked #6 in the state, fell to 3-2 in the SCC
and 14-7 overall, while the Panthers, ranked #9,
improved to 4-1 in the SCC and 10-4 on the season. The
team will now compete in the Saddleback Tournament this
weekend before entering the conference tournament.
After falling behind 2-0 at the end
of the first quarter, the Falcons didn't take their
first lead until freshman
AJ Abrego
(El Rancho HS)
scored with 37 seconds left in the first half to give
the team their 6-5 advantage at the break. The Panthers
outscored Cerritos, 6-2 in the third quarter and rode
that momentum into the fourth, although a goal by
freshman
Jan-Michael
Pineda (Cerritos
HS) with 4:35 got the team to within 12-9.
What hurt Cerritos the most was two penalty shots that
were missed by sophomore
Omar Ramirez
(Bell Gardens HS)
in the first half and one by freshman
Christian
Flores (Montebello
HS) in the second half.
Flores finished the game with a
team-high three goals and five steals, while Abrego (two
steals), Pineda and Ramirez (four assists, three steals)
all added two goals each. Freshman
Torrence Lee
(Cerritos HS)
chipped in with four steals, while freshman goalkeeper
Billy Smith
(Cypress HS)
recorded eight saves on the day. |
