The Cerritos College men's water polo
team split the four games they played at the Saddleback
Tournament over the weekend, as they prepare to compete
in the South Coast Conference Tournament this week. The
Falcons opened with a 16-9 win against Southwestern
College and then dropped a close, 13-12 decision to
Grossmont College. They came back the next day and
recorded an impressive 12-11 win over Palomar College
before losing a tightly contested 14-12 game against
Fullerton College. The Falcons are now 16-9 on the
season and will take part in the conference tournament
at Chaffey College this Thursday through Saturday.
In the win over Southwestern, 11
different players scored to account for the 16 goals,
with sophomore
Omar Ramirez
(Bell
Gardens HS)
leading the way with three goals, while freshman
Christian
Flores
(Montebello
HS),
the team's leading scorer, added four assists and did
not score a goal. Freshman
AJ Abrego
(El
Rancho HS)
scored twice and had two assists, while freshmen
Jimmy
Quintana
(Montebello
HS)
and
John Chao
(Cerritos
HS)
each scored twice.
Flores made his presence felt in the
tough loss to Grossmont, scoring eight of the team's 12
goals, while Ramirez picked up the other four. Freshman
goalkeeper
Billy Smith
(Cypress
HS)
did a good job in goal and turned away six shots, but
the Griffins focused on shooting to the left side and
scored eight of their goals that way. Abrego assisted on
five goals, while Quintana had three steals. In the big
win against Palomar, Quintana stepped up his game and
scored a team-high four goals, while Ramirez (three
goals) and Flores (three goals, three assists, two
steals) also played very well. Smith turned away 10
shots in the win for the Falcons.
In the tournament finale, Flores
picked up five more goals to give him 90 on the season,
which is the third most in one season in school history.
Danny Garcia
holds the top two spots, scoring 96 in 2003 with his
school record 103 goals coming in 2001. Sophomore
Placido Diaz
(Bell
Gardens HS)
chipped in with three goals, while Flores and freshman
Torrence Lee
(Cerritos
HS)
both picked up two steals, while Smith had four in goal. |
