09.11.06 - CERRITOS WINS THREE OF FOUR TO TAKE CONSOLATION TITLE

After staying close with powerful Golden West College in the first half of their season-opening game at the Ventura Tournament this past weekend, the Cerritos College water polo team saw the Rustlers use their depth to pull away for a 17-6 victory. However, the Falcons rebounded very nicely, posting wins over Los Angeles Valley College (13-9), Mt. San Antonio College (13-7) and Citrus College (17-9) to capture the consolation championship. This Wednesday, Cerritos (3-1) will open South Coast Conference action at home and will face Mt. SAC at 3:00 p.m. in an early rematch.

In the game against the Mounties, freshman Christian Flores (Montebello HS) led the team with six goals and also recorded three steals, as the Falcons had six different goal scorers. Freshman Jimmy Quintana (Montebello HS) chipped in with three goals and led the team with four steals. In the consolation championship game against Citrus, Cerritos went up 6-2  in the first period and used that momentum to pull away from the owls. Freshman AJ Abrego (El Rancho HS) had a great game, as he scored four times to go along with four assists and three steal, while Flores added three goals and three assists. Also playing a great game was freshman goalkeeper Billy Smith (Cypress HS), who recorded nine saves and had three steals in the win over Citrus after registering nine saves against the Mounties.

In the tournament opener, Flores had three goals, while sophomore Omar Ramirez (Bell Gardens HS), along with freshmen Steve Baughman (Western HS), Torrence Lee (Cerritos HS) and Nick Yong (Kennedy HS) each scored once. Smith was able to turn away 10 shots in the loss. Against LA Valley, Flores poured in six goals and added three assist, while Ramirez and sophomore Placido Diaz (Bell Gardens HS) each added two scores. Quintana, Lee and freshman Jose Aguirre (Downey HS) all had two steals, with Smith making eight saves.
