After staying close with powerful Golden West
College in the first half of their season-opening game
at the Ventura Tournament this past weekend, the
Cerritos College water polo team saw the Rustlers use
their depth to pull away for a 17-6 victory. However,
the Falcons rebounded very nicely, posting wins over Los
Angeles Valley College (13-9), Mt. San Antonio College
(13-7) and Citrus College (17-9) to capture the
consolation championship. This Wednesday, Cerritos (3-1)
will open South Coast Conference action at home and will
face Mt. SAC at 3:00 p.m. in an early rematch.
In the game against the Mounties, freshman
Christian Flores
(Montebello
HS)
led the team with six goals and also recorded three
steals, as the Falcons had six different goal scorers.
Freshman
Jimmy Quintana
(Montebello
HS)
chipped in with three goals and led the team with four
steals. In the consolation championship game against
Citrus, Cerritos went up 6-2 in the first period and
used that momentum to pull away from the owls. Freshman
AJ Abrego
(El
Rancho HS)
had a great game, as he scored four times to go along
with four assists and three steal, while Flores added
three goals and three assists. Also playing a great game
was freshman goalkeeper
Billy Smith
(Cypress
HS),
who recorded nine saves and had three steals in the win
over Citrus after registering nine saves against the
Mounties.
In the tournament opener, Flores had three goals,
while sophomore
Omar Ramirez
(Bell
Gardens HS),
along with freshmen
Steve Baughman
(Western
HS),
Torrence Lee
(Cerritos
HS)
and
Nick Yong
(Kennedy
HS)
each scored once. Smith was able to turn away 10 shots
in the loss. Against LA Valley, Flores poured in six
goals and added three assist, while Ramirez and
sophomore
Placido Diaz
(Bell
Gardens HS)
each added two scores. Quintana, Lee and freshman
Jose Aguirre
(Downey
HS)
all had two steals, with Smith making eight saves. |
