For the second time in four days, the
Cerritos College men's water polo team handed Mt. San
Antonio College a loss. At the Ventura Tournament last
weekend, the Falcons recorded a 13-7 win en route to
winning the consolation championship of the tournament.
On Wednesday, Cerritos (4-1, 1-0) posted a 13-10 victory
at home against the Mounties, which not only was their
fourth win in a row, it also marked the start of South
Coast Conference play. Next up for the Falcons will be
another conference home match, as the team will take on
Los Angeles Trade-Tech College next Wednesday at 3:00
p.m.
In the first period, Cerritos opened
up a 3-0 lead in the first 2:31 on goals by
Cory Pettis
(Warren HS),
Torrence Lee
(Cerritos HS)
and
AJ Abrego
(El Rancho HS)
and were on top 5-1 before the Mounties staged a
comeback. It got as close as 5-4 in the second period
until Lee scored his second goal of the game with 4:59
remaining in the second period. After James Um of Mt.
SAC made to 6-5, Abrego gave the Falcons a 7-5 cushion
at the half when he scored with 2:06 left.
The Falcons jumped out in the second
half the same as they did to start the game, with two
straight goals to take a 9-5 advantage, as Lee and
freshman
Jimmy
Quintana (Montebello
HS) each score before the Mounties could
respond. Cerritos held a 12-6 lead with 6:33 left in the
game after sophomore
Placido Diaz
(Bell Gardens HS)
scored his second goal. Mt. San Antonio picked up four
of the last five goals, but it was too much to overcome.
On the day, Abrego led the team with
four goals and three steals, while Lee added three goals
and six steals. The trio of Diaz, Pettis and Quintana
each scored twice, while freshman goalkeeper
Billy Smith
(Cypress HS)
was great in net, as the made seven blocks. |
