Heading into their South Coast
Conference men's water polo match against cross-town
rival Long Beach City College, the Cerritos College team
knew that the winner would not only have bragging
rights, they would have something more important: an
inside track to the South Coast Conference title. The
Falcons, winners of nine in a row and ranked #6 in the
state, saw the Vikings break open a close 4-3 game and
used a strong second half to post a 15-9 victory. With
the loss, Cerritos is now 9-2 on the season and 2-1 in
the SCC, while the Vikings, ranked #2 in the state,
improved to 8-2 overall and 2-0 in conference play. Next
up for the Falcons will be the Citrus Tournament, which
will be held on October 6-7.
Each time the Falcons fell behind,
they rallied to make a comeback. But, with each
comeback, the Vikings had one of their own to regain
their sizeable advantage. After falling behind 8-4 at
halftime, Cerritos scored three of the next four goals
in the third quarter to get within, 9-7 on goals by
freshmen
AJ Abrego
(El
Rancho HS)
and
Christian
Flores
(Montebello
HS)
and sophomore
Omar Ramirez
(Bell
Gardens HS).
But the Vikings went on to outscore Cerritos, 6-2 to
rest of the way.
Flores led the team with four goals
and two assists, while Ramirez chipped in with two goals
and a team-high three steals. In net, freshman
Billy Smith
(Cypress
HS)
turned away six shots and also posted four steals. |
