The
Cerritos College men’s water polo team will be looking
to qualify for the state championship for the third year
in a row this season after they found out they have been
seeded #6 for the Southern California Regional Playoffs.
The Falcons (19-9), who dropped a 7-3 decision to cross
town rival Long Beach City College in the South Coast
Conference Tournament championship game on Saturday,
open the playoffs on Friday. Cerritos will face
#3-seeded Cuesta College at 2:00 p.m. with the winner
advancing to face either #2-seeded Long Beach City or
their yet to be determined opponent.
Against the
Vikings in the conference final, the Falcons played a
tight defensive game, but didn’t have much success
finding the net on offense. They pelted the LBCC goal
with 21 shots, but only saw three find the net, with
freshman
Louie
Espinoza (Montebello HS) accounting for
two of the team’s goals. The team’s top scorer, freshman
Dan Biag
(Cerritos HS) was shut out on offense, although
he shared the team lead with three steals, along with
freshman
Ryan Tamula (Cerritos HS). Sophomore
AJ Abrego
(El Rancho HS) picked up the team’s other goal,
while sophomore goalkeeper
Alan Nevarez
(Downey HS/Long Beach City College) posted 13
saves. |
