The
Cerritos College men’s water polo team rebounded from an
emotional South Coast Conference loss to Long Beach City
yesterday and defeated visiting Merced College, 17-6 in
a non-conference game on Thursday. After a sluggish
first half, in which the teams were tied 4-4 at
intermission, the Falcons picked up their game and
rolled to the victory. The win moves their season record
to 10-3 overall, while the Blue Devils dropped to 6-10
on the year. Both teams will now compete in the Citrus
Tournament this weekend.
Early in the
game, Cerritos looked to still be feeling the effects of
their loss to their cross town rivals from the day
before, as they sloppily passed the ball and didn’t get
much on their shots. The teams traded goals in the first
period for a 3-3 tie, while a goal by sophomore
Austin Cooper
(Downey HS) with 1:40 knotted the game at 4-4 at
intermission.
In the second
half, the Falcons looked much sharper and scored three
straight goals in less than two minutes to take a 7-4
lead they would not relinquish. Sophomore
AJ Abrego
(El Rancho HS) opened the scoring in the third
period a goal, while freshman
Louie
Espinoza (Montebello HS) followed with
one of his own. The two each scored again in the period
and Cooper added two, while Cerritos picked up six more
goals in the fourth period.
On the day,
Cooper and Espinoza scored three times and each had two
assists, while Abrejo dished off five assists to go
along with his two tallies. Freshman
Dan Biag
(Cerritos HS) also scored three times, while
Espinoza and sophomore
Andy Laffie
(El Rancho HS) finished with three steals apiece,
with the team finishing with 14 steals. The goalie
tandem of sophomore
Alan Nevarez
(Downey HS/Long Beach City College) and freshman
Josh Del
Toro (Pioneer HS) combined to make eight
saves. |
