The
Cerritos College men’s water polo team split their four
games at the Citrus Tournament this past weekend, but
just missed out on winning three of the four. After a
9-5 win over Santa Ana College to start the tournament,
they dropped a 14-8 decision to Riverside College and
then came back to upend Ventura College, 12-8. In their
final game, the Falcons were defeated in overtime by
Orange Coast College, 7-6, which puts their season
record at 12-5. Cerritos will now have the week off
until they enter the Cuesta Tournament this weekend.
Against Santa
Ana, freshman
Ryan Tamula
(Cerritos HS) led the team with three goals,
while six other players scored once. Sophomore
Austin Cooper
(Downey HS), who did not score a goal, assisted
on three, while the goalkeeping duo of sophomore
Alan Nevarez
(Downey HS/Long Beach City College) and freshman
Josh Del
Toro (Pioneer HS) each played well.
Nevarez made six saves and one steal, while Del Toro
recorded four blocks. In the loss to Riverside, freshman
Louie
Espinoza (Montebello HS) led the team
with two goals, as the team continued to spread their
offense, as six others scored once. Sophomore
AJ Abrego
(El Rancho HS) assisted on three goals, while
Cooper posted four steals, while Nevarez made 12 saves.
On the second
day of the tournament, Nevarez was up to the task
against Ventura, as he made 16 saves to help secure the
win for the Falcons. Freshman
Michael
Villalobos (Whittier HS) stepped up
offensively and scored three times, while the trio of
freshman Dan
Biag (Cerritos HS), Tamula and Cooper all
scored twice to help Cerritos. Abrego once again fed the
ball to his teammates and finished with four assists,
while sophomore
Torrence Lee
(Cerritos HS) added two helpers. In the close
loss to Orange Coast, Tamula picked up two goals, while
Abrego had two assists and sophomore
Chris
Jimenez (Bell Gardens HS/Golden West College)
recorded three steals. Nevarez played a strong game in
goal and had 13 saves. |
