The
Cerritos College men’s water polo team dropped two
one-goal games at the Golden West Tournament II this
past weekend, while they also won twice. The Falcons
have had their share of one-goal contests this season
and have posted a 4-3 mark. With their split over the
weekend, the team is now 17-8 on the year, as they close
out the South Coast Conference schedule on Wednesday
when they play a 4:15 p.m. game at El Camino College.
At the
tournament, the Falcons lost to Santa Rosa College, 8-7
and then defeated American River College, 11-10 on the
first day. They came back and defeated Santa Ana
College, 12-8 before dropping an 8-7 decision to
Riverside College. Cerritos was very familiar with three
of the four teams, as they have now faced them a
combined eight times and have gone 5-3 against them.

Austin Cooper
(Downey HS) scored twice in the loss to Santa
Rosa, while five other players scored one goal each.

AJ Abrego (El Rancho HS) picked up two
assists, with freshman
Ryan Tamula
(Cerritos HS) recording two steals. Freshman
Dan Biag
(Cerritos HS) was the offensive star against
American River, as he scored five times, while Cooper
was right behind with four tallies and added two steals.

goalkeeper
Alan Nevarez
(Downey HS/Long Beach City College) turning away
six shots.
It was more
balance in the win over Santa Ana, with Abrego, Tamula
and freshman
Miguel
Villalobos (Whittier HS) each scoring
twice. Sophomore
Torrence Lee
(Cerritos HS) helped a solid defensive effort
with three of the team’s 16 steals, with Nevarez
registering nine saves. He rotated in goal with freshman
Josh Del
Toro (Pioneer HS), who stopped one shot,
while sophomore
Billy Smith
(Cypress HS) making four saves. In the one-goal
loss to Riverside, Biag picked up three goals and had
two steals, while a quartet of players also scored once.
Nevarez made nine saves. |
