This Week's Sports Schedule

10.22.07 - FALCONS LOSE TWO ONE-GOAL GAMES

The Cerritos College men’s water polo team dropped two one-goal games at the Golden West Tournament II this past weekend, while they also won twice. The Falcons have had their share of one-goal contests this season and have posted a 4-3 mark. With their split over the weekend, the team is now 17-8 on the year, as they close out the South Coast Conference schedule on Wednesday when they play a 4:15 p.m. game at El Camino College.

At the tournament, the Falcons lost to Santa Rosa College, 8-7 and then defeated American River College, 11-10 on the first day. They came back and defeated Santa Ana College, 12-8 before dropping an 8-7 decision to Riverside College. Cerritos was very familiar with three of the four teams, as they have now faced them a combined eight times and have gone 5-3 against them.

Sophomore Austin Cooper (Downey HS) scored twice in the loss to Santa Rosa, while five other players scored one goal each. Sophomore AJ Abrego (El Rancho HS) picked up two assists, with freshman Ryan Tamula (Cerritos HS) recording two steals. Freshman Dan Biag (Cerritos HS) was the offensive star against American River, as he scored five times, while Cooper was right behind with four tallies and added two steals. Abrego picked up five more assists, with sophomore goalkeeper Alan Nevarez (Downey HS/Long Beach City College) turning away six shots.

It was more balance in the win over Santa Ana, with Abrego, Tamula and freshman Miguel Villalobos (Whittier HS) each scoring twice. Sophomore Torrence Lee (Cerritos HS) helped a solid defensive effort with three of the team’s 16 steals, with Nevarez registering nine saves. He rotated in goal with freshman Josh Del Toro (Pioneer HS), who stopped one shot, while sophomore Billy Smith (Cypress HS) making four saves. In the one-goal loss to Riverside, Biag picked up three goals and had two steals, while a quartet of players also scored once. Nevarez made nine saves.
