Playing their
second home game in as many days, the Cerritos
College men's water polo team picked up a 16-5
non-conference win over Merced College on Thursday
afternoon. The Falcons improved to 10-2 on the year,
as they get set to compete in the Citrus Tournament
over the weekend.
Employing an
aggressive defensive scheme to keep the Blue Devils
off their game, the Falcons posted 23 steals, with
12 of the 15 players that saw action recording at
least one steal. On offense, Cerritos used 11 goal
scorers, as the team was in complete control from
the outset.
The Falcons opened
up a 6-0 lead in the first quarter with six
different players scoring. From that point, Cerritos
looked to spread their offense and received a
game-high three goals from sophomore
Miguel
Villalobos (Whittier HS), with
three others adding two tallies. Feeding his
teammates the ball was sophomore Louie
Espinoza (Montebello HS), who
dished out four assists, while sophomores
Mark
Zuniga (Downey HS) and
Chris
Argueta (Cathedral HS) each
added two.
Sophomore
goalkeeper
Ian
Pawlowski (La Serna HS) played
the entire game for the Falcons and finished with
eight saves, while he also registered two steals and
assisted on a goal.
Joining in on the
scoring were Espinoza, sophomore
Adam
Arambula (Kennedy HS) and
freshman
Pat Muniz
(Santa Fe HS), who each had two goals,
while freshman
Boris
Torres (Cathedral HS) led the
way with four steals. Sophomore
Ryan
Tamula (Cerritos HS) posted
three steals.
