The Cerritos
College men's water polo team ran their season
record to 13-3 on the year after winning three of
four games at the Citrus Tournament over the
weekend. The Falcons opened with a 19-3 win over
Santa Monica College and followed that with an 11-6
victory over Ventura College. On the second day, the
team dropped their second game of the season to
Golden West College, losing 17-8, and the rebounded
for a 14-10 victory over Riverside City College.
Cerritos will look to improve to 4-0 in South Coast
Conference play when they travel to Los Angeles
Trade-Tech College for a 3:00 p.m. game on
Wednesday.
Leading just 2-1
against Santa Monica in the first game, the Falcons
scored six times in the second quarter and finished
on a strong note by adding seven more tallies in the
fourth quarter. Freshman
Boris
Torres (Cathedral HS) led the
team with three goals, as 13 different player
scored. The quartet of sophomores
Miguel
Villalobos (Whittier HS) and
David Romero (UVM
Aguascalientes, Mexico), along with freshmen
Cory Baccus (Whittier HS) and
Pat Muniz (Santa Fe HS) each scored
twice. Sophomore
Mark
Zuniga (Downey HS) led the
defense with five steals, as Cerritos posted 24 in
the game.
Sophomore
Dan Biag
(Cerritos HS) paced the Falcons in the win
over Ventura, as he scored five goals and recorded
six steals, while sophomore
Chris
Argueta (Cathedral HS) chipped
in with two goals and a team-high four assists.
Holding a slim 3-2 lead after the first quarter, the
team opened up a 6-3 advantage at halftime and held
the lead the remainder of the game. Sophomore

Toro (Pioneer HS) made four
saves in the second half, while sophomore
Ian
Pawlowski (La Serna HS) played
the first half and turned away two shots, while
making three steals.
In the loss to the
Rustlers, Cerritos fell behind 6-1 early on and
weren't able to recover from the deficit. Zuniga
scored twice, with six others scoring once. The duo
of Villalobos and sophomore
Ryan
Tamula (Cerritos HS) each
scored three times in the final game of the
tournament, as the Falcons held on for the win after
opening up a 6-0 lead in the first quarter. Baccus
and Biag each added two goals, while the team
registered 15 steals, with Baccus leading the way
with four. Freshman goalkeeper
Kieran
Hattie (Sacred Heart College, New
Zealand) made six saves in the second half to
hold off the Tigers.
