Knowing they would
be playing five games over the course of three days,
the Cerritos College men's water polo team looked to
utilize their opportunities. After coming away with
a close 11-10 non-conference win at Ventura College
on Thursday, the Falcons proceeded to sweep all four
games at the Citrus Tournament over the weekend.
With the five wins, Cerritos is now 19-3 overall and
have won seven in a row and 14 of their last 15
games. They resume South Coast Conference action on
Wednesday when they travel to Long Beach City for a
crucial 3:00 p.m. game.
In the first game
at the Citrus Tournament, the Falcons defeated
Modesto College, 13-6 and followed that with a 17-9
victory over Cabrillo College. On the second day,
they won 19-2 over Sierra College and closed out the
tournament with a 10-8 triumph over Santa Rosa
College.
Freshman
Cory
Baccus (Whittier HS) led the
team with four goals in the win over Ventura, while
sophomore

Tamula (Cerritos HS) added three goals.
The defense was crucial in the win, with sophomore

five steals, with sophomore

Villalobos (Whittier HS)
coming up with four steals. Sophomore

distributed the ball to his teammates and had five
assists, as sophomore goalkeepers

Josh Del Toro (Pioneer HS)
combined for seven saves.
The tournament
opened with freshman
Daniel Peng
(Cerritos HS) leading a contingent of nine
different scorers with three goals, while Argueta
and freshman
Jesse
Paredes (Whittier HS) adding
two apiece. Baccus posted three assists with three
others adding two, while the team registered 16
steals. Paredes and freshman
Pat Muniz
(Santa Fe HS) led the team with three
steals, with Pawlowski and Del Toro making two saves
each. Freshman
Kieran
Hattie (Sacred Heart College, New
Zealand) played the first three quarters and
made four saves. Both Baccus and Muniz scored five
times in the victory over Cabrillo, with Argueta
dishing out a season-high seven assists. Biag
finished with two goals, two assists and four
steals, while Tamula and Villalobos each scored
twice. Pawlowski made six saves in the first half
and Del Toro had four stops and a steal in the
second half.
More balance on
the offense end led the way on the second day in the
win over Sierra. Muniz led the team with four goals,
while Biag had three, with Peng, Del Toro (playing
in the field) and freshman
Adam
Arambula (Kennedy HS) each
scoring twice. Cerritos passed the ball very well
and recorded 16 assists, with Argueta (four
assists), Arambula (three) and Peng (three) also
involved. Del Toro spent the first half in goal and
made four saves while Pawlowski (goal and assist)
played in goal the second half and made two saves.
The Falcons closed out the tournament with Baccus
scoring five goals in the win over Santa Rosa, while
Tamula registered a season-high six steals. Argueta
passed out four assists, while Espinoza scored two
times.
