The first time
the Cerritos College competed in the Golden West
Tournament earlier in the year, they won three
out of four games. But that was in the first
week of the season. In their second trip to the
tournament, the Falcons split their four games,
which puts their season record at 21-6, as the
team has now lost three of their last five
games. Cerritos now prepares to face a team of
alumni players on October 28 in a 3:00 p.m.
non-conference contest.
Missing from
the tournament over the weekend was the team's
leading scorer, freshman
Cory
Baccus (Whittier HS), who
has scored 51 goals through the first 23 games
of the year. But picking up the scoring slack at
the tournament was sophomore
Dan Biag
(Cerritos HS), who posted 21 goals in
the four games and now has 60 goals on the
season.
The Falcons
opened with a 10-4 loss to South Coast
Conference rival Long Beach City College, who
had defeated Cerritos, 8-4 two days earlier.
That was followed by a 12-9 win over Cuesta
College to end the first day. On the second day,
the team opened with a 13-9 win over Santa Rosa
College and finished with a 13-11 loss to
Grossmont College.
In the win
over Cuesta, Biag scored seven times, as the
Falcons broke open a close 7-5 game at
intermission and took a 12-8 lead after the
third quarter. Sophomore
Miguel Villalobos (Whittier HS)
contributed three goals, while sophomore
Ryan
Tamula (Cerritos HS)
scored the team's two other goals. The duo of
sophomore Louie Espinoza (Montebello
HS) and
Chris
Argueta (Cathedral HS)
each dished out three assists. Villalobos did
score two of the team's four goals against LBCC,
while Argueta assisted on all four tallies.
Sophomore goalkeeper
Ian
Pawlowski (La Serna HS)
and freshman
Kieran
Hattie (Sacred Heart College,
New Zealand) each made five saves in the
loss.
Biag was
virtually unstoppable against Santa Rosa,
scoring eight times in the win, while Espinoza
countered with three of his own. Trailing 9-7
after the third quarter, the Falcons outscored
their opponent, 6-0. Tamula (three assists) led
the way, while Biag, freshman
Pat
Muniz (Santa Fe HS) and
sophomore
Mark
Zuniga (Downey HS) each
recorded two assists. Biag tried to pull out a
win over Grossmont, but his five goals just
weren't enough, while Espinoza was close behind
with four tallies and a team-high five steals.
Pawlowski and Hattie each made four saves in the
game.
