The Cerritos
College men's water polo team opened their 2008
season at the Golden West Tournament on Friday and
split their first two games. The Falcons (1-1) were
defeated by the host Rustlers, 13-7 in the opener,
but rebounded for a 13-9 win over South Coast
Conference foe Mt. San Antonio College later in the
day. The team is scheduled to play two games on
Saturday (8:00 a.m. and 2:30 p.m.), but their
opponents have not been decided.
In the team's win
over the Mounties, the Falcons received balanced
scoring, with six players scoring two goals each,
while a trio of goalkeepers each saw action. Listed
in the scorebook twice were sophomores
Dan Biag
(Cerritos HS),
Mark
Zuniga (Downey HS),
Chris Argueta (Cathedral HS),
Louie Espinoza (Montebello
HS) and
Ryan
Tamula (Cerritos HS),
along with freshman
Cory
Baccus (Whittier HS).
Espinoza led the team with two assists and three
steals, while Biag also had two steals. In goal,
sophomores
Ian
Pawlowski (La Serna HS) and
Josh
Del Toro (Pioneer HS),
as well as freshman
Kieran
Hattie (Sacred Heart College, New
Zealand) all saw action.
It was freshman
Pat
Muniz (Santa Fe HS) who led
the team with two goals in the loss to Golden West,
with Baccus, Biag, Tamula, Argueta and sophomore
Miguel
Villalobos (Whittier HS) each
scoring once. Biag also led the team with three
steals, while the same trio shared time in goal for
the Falcons.
