After splitting
their first two games of the season at the Golden
West Tournament, the Cerritos College men's water
polo team won their final two games and are now 3-1
on the year. The Falcons don't play again until
September 17 when they host El Camino College at
3:00 p.m. in their South Coast Conference opener.
Cerritos opened
the second day of the tournament with a 17-4 win
over Los Angeles Valley College and followed it with
an 18-5 victory over Citrus College. In the
offensive system set up by head coach
Joe
Abing, the Falcons are a very
balanced program and it was evident in both of their
wins. Eleven players scored in beating LA Valley,
with sophomore
Ryan
Tamula (Cerritos HS)
leading the team with three goals, while 11 also
scored against Citrus, with sophomore
Dan
Biag (Cerritos HS) scoring four
times to pace the squad.
Sophomore
Louie Espinoza (Montebello HS)
dished out three assists and posted four steals, as
the Falcons opened up an 11-2 halftime lead over LA
Valley.
Biag also had three helpers, while the trio
of goalkeepers
Ian
Pawlowski (La Serna HS),
Josh
Del Toro (Pioneer HS) and
Kieran Hattie (Sacred Heart
College, New Zealand) combined to post nine
blocks and three steals, while Hattie also had an
assist.
It was a quick
Falcon lead against the Owls that helped the team to
the big win, as they opened up a 7-1 lead after the
first period. Espinoza and freshman
Cory
Baccus (Whittier HS)
each added three goals, while sophomore
Chris
Argueta (Cathedral HS)
led the team with three assists. Freshman
Pat Muniz
(Santa Fe HS) posted four steals, with the
trio of keepers doing a fine job of preventing the
ball from getting into the back of the net.
