In their South
Coast Conference opener, the Cerritos College men's
water polo team opened up a 10-4 lead against El
Camino College late in the second quarter and then
put the game out of reach with a 6-0 third period.
The end result was a 19-8 win in the Falcon Pool on
Wednesday afternoon. The Falcons (4-1) will now
travel to Los Angeles Valley College for a 3:00 p.m.
non-conference game on Friday.
Scoring the first
two goals in the third period that put the game out
of reach was sophomore
Miguel
Villalobos (Whittier HS),
while a quartet of players each scored one time. But
it was the play of freshman
Cory
Baccus (Whittier HS) that
stood out, as he scored a season-high six goals in
as many attempts, while he also contributed three
steals.
It was the
Cerritos defense that helped create the offense, as
the team registered 31 steals, with sophomore
Louie Espinoza (Montebello HS)
leading the way with six swipes. Every player that
saw action (15), except for two, posted at least one
steal, while the trio of goalies contributed four
steals on their own, while freshman goalie
Kieran
Hattie (Sacred Heart College, New
Zealand) also has two assists.
Villlalobos and
Espinoza each scored three times, while sophomore
Chris Argueta (Cathedral HS)
led the team with three assists, with three players
posting two assists. Sophomore goalie
Josh Del
Toro (Pioneer HS) paced a trio
of goalies with five stops.
