Sophomore
Mark
Zuniga (Downey HS) scored two
fourth quarter goals to help the Cerritos College
men's water polo team break a 6-6 tie with Chapman
University, as the team went on to post a 9-7 win in
the first game of the Cal Lutheran Tournament. The
Falcons (6-2) dropped their next game, a 12-11
overtime decision against Ventura College later that
day. The team will now host Chaffey College in a
South Coast Conference match at 3:00 p.m. on
Wednesday.
After falling
behind 3-0 to the Panthers in the first quarter, it
was Zuniga who got the team on the board with 1:21
remaining in the quarter. Cerritos trailed 5-4 at
halftime, but goals by sophomore
Dan Biag
(Cerritos HS) and freshman
Pat Muniz
(Santa Fe HS) in the third quarter got the
team tied at 6-6. Sophomore
Ryan
Tamula (Cerritos HS) broke the
6-6 tie on a goal with 5:58 remaining in the fourth
quarter before Zuniga's two tallies. Biag led the
team with four steals, while Tamula and sophomore
Louie Espinoza (Montebello HS)
each added three steals.
Against Ventura,
Biag gave the team an 11-10 lead with 1:15 left in
the fourth quarter, but the Pirates tied the game
with 55 seconds left to send the game into overtime.
In the first OT session, Ventura scored with 1:48
remaining, while the Falcons missed out on a 6-on-5
opportunity. The goal turned out to be the winner,
as Cerritos was unable to get the tying goal. Baccus,
Biag and Espinoza all scored three times for the
Falcons, while sophomore
Chris
Argueta (Cathedral HS) added
four assists. Sophomore goalkeeper
Josh Del
Toro (Pioneer HS), who started
the overtime session, made four saves in the game
and added a steal.
