The Cerritos
College men's water polo team broke open a close
12-9 game at the end of the third quarter on Friday
in a non-conference game at Citrus College. The
Falcons outscored the Owls 4-2 in the fourth quarter
and finished with a 16-11 win to run their season
record to 8-2. The team will now resume South Coast
Conference play on Wednesday when they play at 4:15
p.m. and host Mt. San Antonio College.
In the win over
Citrus, freshman
Cory
Baccus (Whittier HS) led the
team with four goals, while the trio of sophomores
Ryan Tamula (Cerritos HS),
Dan
Biag (Cerritos HS) and
Louie Espinoza (Montebello HS)
each scored three times each for the Falcons. Aside
from their offensive prowess, Cerritos used their
swarming defense to help create their offense. Led
by Espinoza and sophomore
Miguel
Villalobos (Whittier HS), who
had five steals each, the Falcons posted 21 steals,
while turning the ball over just nine times.
Sophomore
Chris
Argueta (Cathedral HS) had a
strong all-around game, scoring twice, while he
assisted on three others and contributed three
steals. Biag assisted on three goals, while Baccus
also posted three steals in the win. The trio of
goalkeepers combined for seven saves, with freshman
Kieran Hattie (Sacred Heart
College, New Zealand) seeing all the action in
the first half. He allowed four goals and made three
saves, with sophomore
Ian
Pawlowski (La Serna HS)
registering three saves in the fourth quarter.
Sophomore
Josh Del
Toro (Pioneer HS) made one
save in the third quarter.
