Both the Cerritos
College men's and women's water polo teams will be
taking part in the Southern California Regional
Playoffs, which will begin on Thursday at Pasadena
City College. The top three teams from the playoffs
will advance to the state championships, which will
be played next week at Golden West College.
The Falcon women's
team, who won their second straight South Coast
Conference championship, are seeded #2 and will
receive a bye in the first round. Cerritos (29-1),
winners of 22 matches in a row, will face the winner
of the Long Beach City College-Ventura College match
at 3:15 p.m. on Friday. The Falcons already have a
6-4 victory under their belt against the Vikings,
while they beat the Pirates 17-4 in their only
meeting. A win in the second round will send the
team to the semi-finals against the winner of the
Chaffey College-Orange Coast College winner on
Saturday. Cerritos is 3-0 against Chaffey and 2-0
against Orange Coast this season.
As for the men,
they advanced to the championship match of the
conference tournament, but lost to rival Long Beach
City College. The Falcons (17-10) are seeded #8 and
will play their first round match against Mt. San
Antonio College at 3:45 p.m. on Thursday. Cerritos
has defeated the Mounties two out of three times
this year and will face top-seeded Golden West at
11:30 a.m. on Friday if they win. The Falcons
defeated Mt. SAC in the conference semi-finals,
12-11 in overtime, but lost 17-9 in their only
meeting with the Rustlers.
