In just their
second match in their new aquatic center, the
Cerritos College men's water polo team posted their
first victory, a 13-6 non-conference victory over
Merced College on Thursday afternoon. The Falcons
(5-4) will now enter the Citrus Tournament this
weekend.
Cerritos opened up
a 4-1 first quarter lead over the Blue Devils with
four different players scoring. In fact, in the
first half alone, the Falcons hit two cross bars and
one post on three of four possessions, while Merced
also hit the goal post once. However, the ball found
the net twice in the second quarter and Cerritos
took a 6-2 lead into intermission. Freshman
Pat
McCarthy (Downey HS) scored
both of his goals in the first half, while sophomore
Cory Baccus (Whittier HS) led
the team with five goals and scored at least once in
each of the four quarters.
Freshman
goalkeepers
Justin
Calderon (El Rancho HS) and
Andrew Castro (Downey HS) each
came up with big saves, which led to a fast-break
offense that resulted in Falcon goals. On the day,
the duo posted a combined nine saves, while Castro
registered a pair of steals.
In addition to the
five goals by Baccus, freshman
Jon Canizales (Whittier HS)

offensively by making five steals. Baccus also
dished off three assists, with Muniz and Gabayeron
each adding a pair of helpers.
