The Cerritos
College men's water polo team split their first two
games at the Citrus Tournament on Friday, as they
dropped a 16-10 decision to Ventura College before
coming back for a 9-7 victory over the host Owls.
The Falcons (6-5) will conclude the tournament on
Saturday with two more games.
In the win over
Citrus, Cerritos opened up a 5-2 lead in the first
quarter and fought off the Owls the rest of the way.
The duo of sophomore
Cory Baccus (Whittier HS) and
Pat McCarthy (Downey HS) each
scored three times to lead the way, while freshman PJ Gabayeron
(Cerritos HS) added a pair of goals, to go
along with three assists and two steals.
The Falcons
struggled with their offense, as they had 17
turnovers, but the defense checked in with 18 steals
to counter their mishaps. Sophomore
Daniel Peng
(Cerritos HS) posted three steals with five
players adding a pair of their own, which included
freshman goalkeeper
Andrew
Castro (Downey HS), who made
six saves. Sophomore
Pat Muniz
(Santa Fe HS), who had a pair of steals,
was instrumental in the team scoring three
man-advantage goals, as he drew four ejections
against Citrus players.
More turnovers
followed the team against Ventura, as the Falcons
finished with 16 and played the entire game from
behind. After falling behind 3-2 after the first
quarter, Cerritos saw the Pirates outscore them 5-3
in the second quarter for an 8-5 halftime lead.
Muniz and Gabayeron
each scored three times for the Falcons, whole
freshman
Joe Joson
(St. John Bosco HS) posted three steals, as
did freshman
Jon Canizales (Whittier HS).
Freshmen
Justin
Calderon (El Rancho HS) made
four saves and one steal in the loss, while Castro
posted just one save.
