This Week's Sports Schedule

10.09.09 - WATER POLO SPLITS FIRST TWO GAMES AT TOURNAMENT
The Cerritos College men's water polo team split their first two games at the Citrus Tournament on Friday, as they dropped a 16-10 decision to Ventura College before coming back for a 9-7 victory over the host Owls. The Falcons (6-5) will conclude the tournament on Saturday with two more games.

In the win over Citrus, Cerritos opened up a 5-2 lead in the first quarter and fought off the Owls the rest of the way. The duo of sophomore Cory Baccus (Whittier HS) and Pat McCarthy (Downey HS) each scored three times to lead the way, while freshman PJ Gabayeron (Cerritos HS) added a pair of goals, to go along with three assists and two steals.

The Falcons struggled with their offense, as they had 17 turnovers, but the defense checked in with 18 steals to counter their mishaps. Sophomore Daniel Peng (Cerritos HS) posted three steals with five players adding a pair of their own, which included freshman goalkeeper Andrew Castro (Downey HS), who made six saves. Sophomore Pat Muniz (Santa Fe HS), who had a pair of steals, was instrumental in the team scoring three man-advantage goals, as he drew four ejections against Citrus players.

More turnovers followed the team against Ventura, as the Falcons finished with 16 and played the entire game from behind. After falling behind 3-2 after the first quarter, Cerritos saw the Pirates outscore them 5-3 in the second quarter for an 8-5 halftime lead.

Muniz and Gabayeron each scored three times for the Falcons, whole freshman Joe Joson (St. John Bosco HS) posted three steals, as did freshman Jon Canizales (Whittier HS). Freshmen Justin Calderon (El Rancho HS) made four saves and one steal in the loss, while Castro posted just one save.
