After splitting
their first two games of the Citrus Tournament on
Friday, the Cerritos College men's water polo team
won another game, while dropping one on the second
day. The Falcons (7-6) registered an 8-6 win over
Los Angeles Valley College, while they were
defeated, 15-9 by Orange Coast College. The win over
LA Valley was the first in three games this season
over the Monarchs. Cerritos will now resume South
Coast Conference action at 4:15 p.m. on Wednesday
when they host Los Angeles Trade-Tech College.
In the win over LA
Trade-Tech, freshman PJ Gabayeron
(Cerritos HS) scored three times and added
two steals, while five other players scored once.
The freshman duo of
Justin
Calderon (El Rancho HS) and
Andrew Castro (Downey HS) were
the keys to the win, as they combined for 10 saves
and added three steals. The game was close from the
outset, but the Falcons never trailed and held off
the Monarchs late in the game.
Sophomore
Cory Baccus (Whittier HS)
scored a team-high three goals and added four steals
in the loss to the Pirates, while sophomores
Pat Muniz
(Santa Fe HS) and
Daniel Peng
(Cerritos HS) each scored a pair of goals.
It was a rough first quarter that did in the
Falcons, as they trailed 9-2, thanks in part to four
turnovers that led to Orange Coast goals. Cerritos
did start to rebound in the second quarter and took
a 10-7 deficit into halftime, but that would be as
close as they would get.
