After falling
behind early to rival Long Beach City College in a
South Coast Conference men's water polo match on
Wednesday afternoon, Cerritos College found their
scoring touch too late and suffered a 12-7 loss at
the Falcon Aquatic Center. The afternoon also
featured the college's dedication and ribbon cutting
ceremony, which followed the match. With the loss,
the Falcons dropped to 11-9 overall and 3-2 in
conference play, while the Vikings, ranked #4 in the
state, improved to 14-4 overall and 5-0 in the SCC.
Cerritos will now compete in the Golden West
Tournament, which will feature nine teams playing at
Cerritos on Friday and Saturday. The Falcons will
open with Santa Ana on Friday at 12:25 p.m. and then
play Los Angeles Valley College at 6:55 p.m., which
is the final game of the day.
In the match, the
Falcons had no answer for the bigger Vikings, who
received three goals from Janko Jovanovich, as well
as a pair of goals from a trio of other players.
Additionally, LB City goalkeeper Duran Reid came up
with numerous close-range saves, including a pair
against freshman PJ Gabayeron
(Cerritos HS) in the third quarter when
Cerritos was looking to get back in the game.
But in
the critical third quarter, the Vikings outscored
Cerritos, 4-0 to open up a 9-2 lead. The Falcons did
receive a pair of goals from both Gabayeron and
sophomore
Cory Baccus (Whittier HS) in
the fourth quarter, but the outcome had already been
decided.
Long Beach City
was able to score hard on hard shots from outside,
while the Falcons looked to move the ball inside and
look for the higher percentage shots. But the
Vikings were able to clamp down and limit the amount
of shots from Cerritos, who had just 17 on the day.
Falcon goalkeepers
Justin
Calderon (El Rancho HS) and
Andrew
Castro (Downey HS) combined for 10
saves and five steals.
