Serving as one of
the hosts for the Golden West Tournament, the
Cerritos College men's water polo team had a chance
to expose their new facility to eight other schools,
while also playing their first games under the
lights. The Falcons did not disappoint, as they
opened with a 13-8 win over Santa Ana College and
followed that with a 14-10 win over Los Angeles
Valley College to close out the first day of the
tournament. Cerritos (13-9) won their bracket and
will play the winners of the other two brackets on
Saturday. They open with a 9:10 a.m. game against
Fullerton College and follow that with a 12:25 p.m.
contest against Orange Coast College.
In the win over
Santa Ana, freshman
Pat
McCarthy (Downey HS) scored
five times, as the Falcons pulled away after the two
teams were tied at five early in the third quarter.
It was McCarthy who scored a pair of goals to give
Cerritos a 7-5 lead, while freshmen
Shaun Farnell (Pacifica HS)
and PJ Gabayeron
(Cerritos HS) also scored to help the team
take a 9-6 lead into the fourth.
Daniel Peng
(Cerritos HS) and McCarthy opened the
scoring in the fourth and the Falcons were able to
pull away for the win.
Sophomore
Cory Baccus (Whittier HS)
added three goals and a pair of steals, while the
duo of Peng (two steals) and Gabayeron (two steals)
also played well. Freshman
Andrew
Castro (Downey HS) played
the entire game in goal and made six saves.
In another tight
game, the Falcons trailed the Monarchs 5-4 in the
second quarter, but slowly pulled away. Gabayeron
tied the game at five, while Baccus scored two in a
row to give Cerritos a 7-5 lead. After LA Valley
scored, the Falcons responded with four in a row to
open up a sizable advantage. Along with two goals
from McCarthy, freshman
Jon Canizales (Whittier HS)
and Baccus (four goals, four steals, three assists)
also scored.
Freshman
Justin
Calderon (El Rancho HS) came
up with some big saves in goal and finished with
nine in the match. Gabayeron accounted for three
goals, four assists and three steals, while
McCarthy, Canizales (three assists) and sophomore
Ethan Klotzer (Downey HS) each
added a pair of goals.
