Although the
Cerritos College men's water polo team would loved
to have recorded a win in their first match in their
new aquatics center, they did provide everyone with
several thrilling moments. The Falcons trailed Los
Angeles Valley College by as much as 7-2 in the
first half before finally tying the score at 12 with
seven seconds left in the fourth period. However,
they were unable to score in either of the two
three-minute overtime periods and dropped a 14-12
decision. The Cerritos (0-1) will now compete in the
Golden West Tournament next weekend.
With time running
out in regulation, sophomore
Ethan
Klotzer (Downey HS) received a
long pass after LA Valley failed to get off a shot
before the shot clock expired and scored on Monarch
goalkeeper Trevor McHugh, who made numerous
point-blank saves to secure the win for LA Valley.
But that would be
the last goal the Falcons would score in the match,
as Jensen Houston and Alexander Trenk each scored
goals in the one of the two overtime periods.
Cerritos missed two huge scoring opportunities in
regulation, as they failed to score on penalty
shots, the second which would have cut their deficit
to 10-9 in the third period. The Monarchs came right
back to score on their next possession for a
three-goal cushion.
Sophomore
Cory
Baccus (Whittier HS) led the
team with four goals and two assists, while freshman
PJ
Gabayeron (Cerritos HS)
accounted for three goals before his third ejection.
Sophomore
Pat Muniz
(Santa Fe HS) also put three in the net,
while freshman
Pat
McCarthy (Downey HS) posted a
pair of steals. Freshman goalkeeper
Justin
Calderon (El Rancho HS) came
up with 10 blocks in a losing cause.
